What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

The first design today has two 9 Patch block designs using two different fabrics, and it looks good.

The second design has 4 different 9 patch blocks and 3 fabrics, and it also looks good! One of the block designs is only used once.

The only down side I can think of is that I couldn’t justify spending an hour in a quilt shop to select the fabrics!

Single Irish Chain consists of 9P blocks alternated with alternate plain blocks.

My version uses 9P bocks, some solid ones, and some with colours added here and there.

I never know what sort of design I will find.

I got tired of playing with red and white designs, with just one red fabric, so started this project file with assorted 9 patch blocks and two red fabrics with the white. It was also a response to my state quilter’s guild celebrating their 40th birthday.

I have a large collection of 9P designs to choose from, but i am trying not to add too many to the file for these designs.

I think the last designs is my favourite today, but will possibly change my mind when the first coffee of the morning kicks into gear properly!

Third day in a row with almost monotone designs. I love finding fabrics which feature one dominant colour, but with lots of variation in the designs and the way the variations are mixed, with the most obvious variation between those fabrics and the background.

My favourite for the day is the first one, but the second one is rather interesting too.

Sometimes I have crazy ideas, like what if I select a random collection applique  block designs, and a random collection of pieced block designs for a new project file?

So I did … Jeparit Jewels  and some 9P stars.

I should have limited the number of designs in each of the block collections, but I didn’t.

After the first design came together I had to add fabric … and based the colours on the applique collection rather than the bright used in the stars.

So far, interesting!

I am not too sure if the  shapes of the applique will work well ...

Fairly basic pieced blocks, plus quilting motifs …. interesting! Would be interesting in almost any two colours.

My favourite today is the second design!

The darker the sky, the better the stars shine.

No stars in the second design, but the gold and white shine anyway.

When looking at Christmas lights in daylight we do not see the colours or the sparkle of the stars.

I like the contrasts in this project file … the pale pieced blocks in the corners calm down what could be a rather busy looking design.

In the second design I like the way the contrast background in the centre square creeps outside the square.

Interesting design, pretty fabric choices.

I love the second design … totally different to anything I have ever seen anywhere.

I like both of these designs … no favourite today!

I haven’t quite finished my first coffee of the day, and it took me a couple of minutes to work out what was wrong with the design above. Can you see it?

It took a while for me to realize when I started this project file that the corners of each Nine Patch block looked better if they were a paler shade of green.

Answer to the question above … the corner blocks contain a mis-coloured piece, even when they are not on the side.

Very interesting border … not too sure I would ever use it on any real quilt … but interesting to play with in the virtual world!

Very busy, but also interesting.

Today’s designs come from a project file started in Electric Quilt 5 …. I am now using EQ8.

Most of the blocks came from the EQ library, but there are a few of the original blocks I was adding back then. Those blocks had been scribbled onto paper, and transferred to graph paper, but still with pencils. Now I draw new ideas in EQ8, though I still scribble some onto paper if I have an idea when the computer is not close by.

Most of the quilt designs in the project have a mixture of traditional blocks and my own ...

Very bright!

Not my favourite colours, and it is not applique, but I love both designs!

All the blocks are basic 9 Patch designs.

These designs all have Nine Patch blocks with identical corner squares, a vision I had one sleepless midnight hour. There are lots of possible corner blocks which create s filler design right across the quilt top. They become the background design when the other five squares are added to the mix.

I like the colouring in the first design best, but like the second design overall design best.

Interesting, and in our local sporting team colours.

The blocks are all 9P blocks and simpler to put together than they look.

I think my favourite of these two designs is the second one, but don’t quote me on that!

The 9 Patch blocks are not as complicated as they look … especially the outer with 8 of the 9 squares just the background fabric.

I love the second design, and it has a lot of plain squares scattered all over the design.

Looks much more intricate than it is … it is all just 9 Patch blocks.

The night vision part of the title refers to the night I woke up with an idea floating through my brain that the four corners of a 9 Patch block could become a 4 Patch block when the blocks are joined together.

The colour combination in this project file will always look good … with the block designs hopefully adding to the effect.

I think I like the second design best, though that opinion could change after a coffee, or tomorrow morning when I open up to add another couple of quilt designs.

I like it … lots of room for quilting!

Big question … red or white thread? Or a mixture?

Design number 50 in the project file, but it is one short of 50 blocks.
